If 2020 was just a prelude to the uncertainty of 2021, then the wheels of this newly discovered streaming culture have just been activated. Rather, television was considered a piece of furniture — some turned it on while eating to forget for a moment the loneliness that accompanied it; some wanted time to pass; and for some, television was the only space to breathe. Television is no longer just a stopover, it is part of our daily lives. As the pandemic continues to drive us into our homes, it is now more important than ever that the content that artists develop is what we can turn to.

2020 was a year of intense ups and downs in the current landscape – for everyone Paatal Locke, we have five more Hasmukhs. 2021 is also not an example of good streaming, but it still started steadily. The more I thought about this list, the harder it became. Only in the last ten days – which I received the nickname “streaming gold mine” – delivered some of the best televisions of the year. Every great show was downloaded by another. So, after hours of twisting and turning, here are some of my favorite shows from 2021, ranked:

10. Sweet tooth

Streaming on: Netflix

There is something fascinating about the show with such a joyful and heartfelt show that everyone needs in their lives. While a boy-deer hybrid embarks on a journey around the United States in search of his mother in a post-apocalyptic setting, we are allowed to see some of the most complex sets. From forests full of lumpy trees to unlit theme parks, Sweet tooth is a visual miracle. But it is the host of the show Christian Convery, erupting with cheerful optimism and passion for the good, who surprises you. This is a television for children as well as for adults.

9. The bad batch

Streaming on: Disney + Hotstar

Top 10 shows from 2021 (so far), ranked, satellite of the film

Although the entire season has not yet come out, with only six episodes coming out, The bad batch has set the bar so incredibly high that it was impossible not to include it here. This is one of star Wars“The most subversive content – here an unlimited group of genetically advanced clones are fighting across a galaxy after the Clone Wars. Complemented by its spectacular and bold animation, almost every sequence of actions turns out to be a spectacle. It’s a shame that you have to wait every week to see what they are preparing for you.

8. Cobra Kai (Season 3)

Streaming on: Netflix

Top 10 shows from 2021 (so far), ranked, satellite of the film

Season 2 of Cobra Kai ended up fighting at school. Just when you thought things couldn’t get crazier, Season 3 came out, throwing all your preconceived ideas out of the park. This is probably the most prone show on this list – you are left craving more after each episode. Every bit of the sequence, especially the one involving Johnny Lawrence and Daniel LaRousseau, reminds you of the blockbuster The child is a karateka the franchise on which this is based. It is a nostalgic journey into the past, as well as a call for the writer’s ability to improve content that has been held sacred for more than three decades.

7. The subway

Streaming on: Amazon Prime Video

Top 10 shows from 2021 (so far), ranked, satellite of the film

While watching The subway, I was instantly reminded of Barry Jenkins’ 2016 directorial venture. Moonlight. If the film confronts the idea of freedom in an implicit sense, the show takes a more literal approach here. And just like Chiron, Cora (the main role played by an enslaved woman in pre-tellural America) is also completely mysterious in expression. This is Cora’s odyssey – as she travels from Georgia to Indiana – but also Jenkins’. The world he develops is so texturally and lyrically influential that you travel not only with Cora, but also with Jenkins as a director. This is a cinematic feat.

6. Master of None (Season 3)

Streaming on: Netflix

Top 10 shows from 2021 (so far), ranked, satellite of the film

At first glance, this season, or rather separation, left me amazed. But it grew on me, somewhat unexpectedly, when I decided to try again. This is the most mature, most developed work of Aziz Ansari so far. He navigates skillfully the moral complexities of the relationship, often borrowing from people like neorealist authors like Lucino Visconti. However, the penultimate episode – which focuses on Naomi Waite’s character while struggling with in vitro fertilization – is what separately won this position on this list. This is a triumph of visual storytelling.

5. Invincible

Streaming on: Amazon Prime Video

Top 10 shows from 2021 (so far), ranked, satellite of the film

Invincible is about an alien superhero who trains his son, who has recently gained strength. Towards the end of the first episode, through a gratuitous violent show of action, Invincible illustrates the two-way nature of such forces – you can either protect humanity or cause its destruction. While it’s mostly a commentary on the desire for control, it also makes us watch for the ongoing madness around superheroes in general. Watch this show for his inimitable voice and only for the fiery, bloody finale of the season. This is not for the faint of heart.

4. Pretend it’s a city

Streaming on: Netflix

Top 10 shows from 2021 (so far), ranked, satellite of the film

Martin Scorsese’s limited documentation has nothing to do with anything in particular. Sometimes he focuses on the growth of New York, and other times we are given a glimpse into the mind of the show’s central focus, Fran Lebowitz, a sharp, erudite and witty author. Scorsese and Lebowitz make a dynamic duet – sometimes they joke; sometimes they both laughed at her own remarks. Scorsese is both the audience and the director. But he does not take the place that Lebowitz deserves. To broadcast for a wide range of conversations – from sports to smoking – Pretend it’s a city never meanders. This is nonsense.

3. Formula 1: Make it survive (season 3)

Streaming on: Netflix

Top 10 shows from 2021 (so far), ranked, satellite of the film

In Season 2, Toto Wolf had equated Formula One racing with war planning. Last season continues to embody this. Moving this season, from garage drama and racing alone to garage drama and pandemic racing, allows us to process the horrors of the past year. Conditions everywhere are hostile and unstable, but even more so when you are in a ship with an open cockpit exceeding a few hundred miles per hour. Season 3 is just as nervous as previous seasons, where you have to endure the gut after every other episode.

2. The Family Man (Season 2)

Streaming on: Amazon Prime Video

My only peek this season, apart from Samantha Akinini’s bronze face, was how explicitly apolitical it was. However, Raj & DK put such a display on such confident film production that you can’t help but forgive it. Srikant (the brilliant Manoj Bajpayee), now a layman who needs to get involved in IT work from 9 to 5, misses his spy noises at TASC. And while he is far from his only true love, the prime minister’s life is at stake. The last few episodes, which threw my pulse off the chart, managed to create a spiral of thrill and fear. The show also weaves in moments of tenderness effectively – when Srikant cries softly, the pain becomes palpable. Oh, and the pleasure you feel while seeing Bajpayee slap someone is unparalleled! This season of Family man will it mess with the circuits of your brain and can the show be great if not?

1. Eastown mare

Streaming on: Disney + Hotstar

Top 10 shows from 2021 (so far), ranked, satellite of the film

The seven-episode HBO series elevates the crime-mystery genre in which it finds itself – although the overall rhythm seems familiar, the individual rhythms are what sets the show apart. As she investigates the murder of a young girl, a sense of crippling loneliness surrounds Mare (steel Kate Winslet). People in her town, as well as her family, have lost hope in Meyer’s ability to perform her only tasks, that of detective and mother. Mare from Easttown simultaneously provides high-octane shots and vibration-inducing scales. This is a smart show that meets every sensitivity, a key feature of HBO.
