As COVID-19 has forced many migrant workers to face loss of income, food shortages and uncertainty about the future, Animal Ethics People (PETA) India has teamed up with actor Sunny Leone to feed 10,000 workers migrants in Delhi through the Uday Foundation.

“I’m happy to rejoin PETA India – this time I’ll get thousands of vegan foods full of protein in need,” says Leone. “We are facing a crisis, but together, with compassion and solidarity, we will move forward.” Dishes consist of daal and rice or khichdi and often fruit. One cup of cooked lentils contains 17.9 grams of protein. Chicken egg contains only 6 grams.

A vegan diet can help prevent conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and other diseases that increase the risk of death from COVID-19. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the largest organization of nutritionists, states: “Vegetarians and vegans are at reduced risk for certain health conditions, including coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, certain cancers and obesity. . ”

The distribution of vegan dishes is also timely, as the current pandemic is largely thought to stem from the live meat market. Similarly, SARS, bird flu, swine flu, Ebola, HIV and many other diseases are thought to have spread to humans from animals in livestock markets, on factory farms or during slaughter.

Leone was named PETA of the Year in India in 2016 and has previously participated in the organization’s campaigns in support of vegan fashion, vegetarianism and the adoption and neutering of dogs and cats. She debuted in Bollywood in the erotic thriller “Jism 2” in 2012 and will soon be seen in Shero and Anamika.
